Meet the Speakers
Jake Leguee, Sask Wheat Board Chair
Jake Leguee farms in Southeast Saskatchewan with his wife, their three young sons, and several other family members. They grow canola, durum, hard red spring wheat, lentils, peas, and flax. They are a progressive, third-generation family operation that is always seeking continuous improvement in everything they do. Outside the farm, Jake is the Board Chair with the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, where he also serves as Research Chair. Jake is also the current chair of the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition. Check out his blog at www.thelifeofafarmer.com.
Dr. Steve Shirtliffe, University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture and Bioresources Professor
Steve Shirtliffe grew up on a farm in Manitoba and then in the 90’s returned to the University of Manitoba for his MSc and PhD. Since then, he has been a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. His position involves teaching, research, and extension in the areas of crop imaging, weed control and agronomy. Past and current research projects have focused on pulse agronomy, non-herbicidal weed control as well as phenotypic and agronomic applications of crop imaging using UAV, ground and satellite imagery. He has a wide range of interests and collaborates widely with computer scientists, plant breeders, geographers, economists soil scientists and engineers to form dynamic research groups to tackle inter-disciplinary problems.
Walter Schwabe, Echo Point Corporation
Walter is one of four co-founders, Echo Point’s majority shareholder, and the only Officer at this time. With over 20 years of public speaking experience, Walter has advised thousands of business professionals, public sector employees, and elected officials from all three levels of government. Walter lays out his leadership principles based on what he’s learned as a serial tech entrepreneur. During his presentation, Walter shares stories and insights learned from advising multiple business and government leaders.
